Hunting & Fishing
Fishing
Minnesota has more walleye, walleye lakes and walleye anglers than any other state. The allure might be the sport of finding and outwitting this often elusive and finicky Minnesota native fish or maybe it’s just the delightful taste of walleye fillets. Whatever the reason, you’ll find your share of this and other species of fish in the lakes and rivers throughout the region surrounding Mapleton. The Maple River, running all through the Mapleton area, provides variable success in fishing for bullheads, catfish and an occasional walleye or northern.

Due to an abundance of wooded creeks found in this part of Minnesota, you can generally find good pheasant hunting and quite a bit of opportunity for white-tailed deer hunting. Releases of wild turkeys in the years past are now benefiting this area. The success rate for turkey hunters in Blue Earth county ranges from 20 to 40 percent with rates of up to 56 percent seen in several nearby counties. Waterfowl hunting opportunities also abound in the area.
Minnesota boasts 1,380 public wildlife areas with 1.2 million acres of habitat for wildlife, hunters and wildlife watching opportunities. The Maple River Wildlife Management Area encompasses 317 acres and is located 2.5 miles north of Mapleton on state Highway 22 and 3.5 miles west on County Road 163. This WMA offers hunting for deer, small game, pheasant and waterfowl, as well as viewing of wetland and prairie wildlife. The George and Elizabeth Lange WMA encompasses 74 acres and is located 3.75 miles southwest of Mapleton on State Highway 30 and .25 mile east on 124th Street. There are opportunities for hunting deer, small game, forest game birds, pheasants, waterfowl and turkey, as well as viewing of wetland, prairie and forest wildlife. For more information on WMAs, call the WMA area wildlife office at 507-225-3572. Always ask permission before entering private land. Any entry onto the private property of another without permission is considered trespass. Landowners may be able to pursue court action against trespassers whether the property is posted or not. If you are caught trespassing, you may be issued a citation and assessed a fine under civil penalties, and repeat violators can lose their license or registration. Or, if you are convicted of violating trespass laws under criminal procedures, you may lose your hunting privileges for up to two years, lose hunting equipment and be subject to fines and possibly a jail sentence.
